Few shapes in the automotive world are as instantly recognisable as the G-Class. Its boxy silhouette, exposed door hinges and upright windscreen have barely changed in decades — and that, precisely, is the point.

Military beginnings

The G-Class was originally conceived as a rugged off-road vehicle for military and government use. Its body-on-frame construction, three locking differentials and short overhangs made it almost unstoppable on difficult terrain.

The move to luxury

Over the years the cabin grew more refined, the engines more powerful and the equipment more lavish. Today's G-Class offers quilted leather, ambient lighting and a powerful sound system, yet still retains the hardware to climb steep, rocky trails.

“Nothing else looks like it, sounds like it or turns heads quite like it.”

The AMG effect

The AMG G 63 transformed the model into a cultural phenomenon. Its hand-built twin-turbo V8 and side-exit exhausts give it a presence that few vehicles can match, and demand has remained remarkably strong.

Buying advice

When buying a pre-owned G-Class, inspect the underbody carefully, confirm the full service history and check that all three differential locks engage correctly. Genuine low-mileage examples are highly prized and hold their value well. Speak to our consultants about the examples currently in our collection.
